History of Chestnut Hill
Chestnut Hill is one of Philadelphia’s historic neighborhoods. It borders Fairmont Park and is adjacent to Mt. Airy, another Philadelphia neighborhood. Chestnut Hill was established in 1854 in the Act of Consolidation. The state legislature annexed 129 miles land between the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers to create this area. Once a summer retreat for those who lived in the city proper, the original names of Chestnut Hill were Sommerhausen and Cresheim. It was part of the German Township laid out by Francis Daniel Pastorius, who was the leader of the German immigrants in Philadelphia and the first agent to German investors in the neighborhood. Chestnut Hill was a meeting point for Philadelphians and the farmers who lived outside the city (the suburbs).
Chestnut Hill has its roots in the wartime. A battle of the American Revolution was fought here and then became home to the Mower U.S. Army General Hospital during the Civil War. In the mid-19th century, Chestnut Hill began to take shape as we know it today, a bedroom community of Center City. It’s also known as a “railroad suburb.”
